How To Take care of a Turtle: Habitat

Turtles are awesome pets to keep at home. But it is important, that you provide a suitable environment for them. What your going to need will vary with the type of turtle you have, but these are the essentials to keep in mind:

  • Turtle habitats need to include both an area to swim around in and a basking ground with plenty of sunshine (or a UV lamp).
  • The temperature of the environment needs to be carefully regulated. The water should be kept cooler than the rest of the habitat.
  • Baby turtles kept indoors should have at least a 20-gallon turtle tank.
  • Turtles make a bit of mess so you need to clean out the tank once a week and use a filter to prevent health problems.

Usually people will get a tank and fill the bottom with pebbles and some sand. You can then put in some sort of log/branch that the turtle can climb up on and bask when it needs to. It’s also important to give your painted turtle a place to hide under if it senses danger.

Not having a place to feel safe can have negative impacts on your turtles happiness and health.I remember having alot of problems because I went around the net trying to find free information and ended up missing important steps in learning how to take care of a painted turtle.

How To Take Care of a Turtle: What Do They Eat?

Turtles eat a variety of foods. They are willing to eat normal store bought turtle food, but it’s healthier to provide a more varied diet.

They will eat worms, small chunks of  meat, and small leaves. For bigger turtles, fish, raw vegetables, frogs, crickets (bugs), consist of their main diet. If you’re having trouble getting them to eat, feed them something different or something smaller. They may have eating problems because they’re not digesting properly. Having a light for heat is important because turtles require heat and sunlight to properly digest food and help develop their shells.

It’s hard to go further into detail without knowing what sort of turtle you have, because they all need different things. That’s why I recommend getting a comprehensive guide, you will be thankful for it later when problems arise.
